My X-S1 has developed a EVF problem

Forums:
A small curvy bright yellow line in one corner, has anyone had this problem?

First I've heard of it. Waiting to see what others post.

Thats the second one ive heard of now. A forum friend (from another forum) is having loads of bother with this. His camera has been back to fuji for this to be repaired only to happen again even quicker than the first time. Ill see if i can get some images from him to share to see if its the same problem. Cheers Paul UK

These images are taken by a friend of his evf issue...... (ive asked him if its ok but hes not replied yet so I may have to take them down.) Looks like containments have gotten in there, my very first one came back from Fuji like that (well not as bad) after having the new lens/sensor fitted.

What are "containments"?

It looks like a typo for "contaminants". My typing fingers are always trying to sabotage my replies and I guess that Paul's fingers have a similar affliction.

Thank you Paul and Photo!

Sorry Paul, I should have figured it out.

They really look like some bugs or worms to me. Did the service center disclose anything about the cause? This is distressing...

... It should be noted that this is his second (or is it third ?) X-S1 with the same issue. Paul, by the way, I see he has agreed to let you share the images.

Thank you Labe that is what is what is happening to mine, I called Amazon and they have agreed to refund my money, even though the return time had expired a little.

Well, they are hardly an invasion of his privacy, just a picture of an image though a viewfinder with some odd marks in it. I doubt he would mind.

Looks like Fungus. I've seen things that look like that in old lens. is the camera kept in a very damp or humid place . Or Dust.

Hi everyone - sorry to have to introduce myself under these circumstances. Here is a synopsis of my ordeal a the other forum. May 6 - Sent the camera back to Amazon today and a new one will be here tomorrow - gotta love their service. Apparently the EVF got too hot while I was out shooting yesterday. This morning I noticed yellow smears in the viewfinder while I was adjusting the diopter wheel. It wasn't on the LCD screen and the pics I took didn't have them so I knew that it was the EVF. A quick search on Google found a few problems with leaving the camera in the sun, etc. Some people say that the yellow artifacts are stuck pixels. I'm considering buying some reflective tape to put on the EVF bump (top of camera) to keep it from building up heat. This is Florida and it's not Summer yet. Think I'll crank up the old S1500. May 7 - New camera arrived about an hour ago ~20 hrs after I started this return. May 7 - Well the new camera did the same thing. I went to Leu Gardens in Orlando and the temperature was about the same as yesterday 91°F (33°C) so I kept my hand over the top of the camera when I wasn't using it. About 45 minutes to an hour into my walk I stopped at a shady bench to review my pics. When I switched to the EVF I couldn't believe that I was seeing a couple of yellow marks in the upper left. I had been checking the EVF after each shot and no artifacts had appeared until just then. Here's a shot I took when I got home using my old S1500 in Super Macro. Up until then I had only seen the yellow marks but now I see a blue line connecting the yellow marks and an additional smear of blue and yellow above them. https://googledrive.com/host/0B0SVKF1RQamMd0YzS0ExMkIyZnc/yellow_artifacts.JPG May 9 - At this point I should point out that With both cameras the sn began with 33A. May 13 - Well the camera arrived at the New Jersey facility about an hour ago. Now its wait and see. May 24 - I called Fuji yesterday and was told that the EVF was being replaced under warranty and would probably ship Tuesday - Monday is a holiday in the USA. May 29 - I called the repair center again yesterday and the same guy who told me my camera would probably ship last Tues told me that it would probably ship this Friday. After telling me of how many hours they've been working due to the holiday and a number of other reasons I said that I only had the camera for 1 day and they've had it for 14. He promised to expedite things, yada, yada. He was, however, interested in asking me about the EVF issue since he has the same camera - bought 3 years ago. I mentioned that I had a picture of the viewfinder taken with my S1500 and he asked me to send it to him. Apparently Fuji USA is not aware of the problem. May 30 - I just got an email saying it shipped today and should get here Wednesday. June 3 - Glad I was home when FedEx showed up a while ago. I tracked the camera this morning and it was scheduled to be delivered tomorrow - signature required. Well the camera has a new EVF and seems to function normally - no details from Fuji. Unfortunately its overcast at the moment so I'm waiting for the sun. June 4 - Well the camera works fine but the yellow particles formed again on the new EVF - see V mark upper right. They didn't appear until noon and I'm wondering if it might be mold spores. I went a month without camera this last time plus the cost to ship it to NJ. https://googledrive.com/host/0B0SVKF1RQamMd0YzS0ExMkIyZnc/DSCF3396.JPG June 6 - Well today, before it got hot, the sensor started doing it's Etch A Sketch imitation. Think I'll use it until I can't stand it anymore then send Fuji my documentation photos to see what they say. I just hate paying to send my camera to them and losing another month of photography. https://googledrive.com/host/0B0SVKF1RQamMd0YzS0ExMkIyZnc/DSCF3401-Fri.JPG June 10 - Well I sent Fuji another email. This address was from a real person and did not say "do not reply to this email" so I assume that they received it. This was my first message. "Well I'm sorry to report that my new EVF started developing the yellow streaks on the first day after only 4 hours. This time it was on a relatively cool morning. The second day was hot and it didn't get any worse however, on the third day (yesterday) the streaks more than doubled. Today there was no change but the streaks are starting to get distracting (see attached photos). So now what do I do? Send it back for another repair only to pay shipping again and be without a camera for another month? The first camera worked flawlessly for 2 weeks before seeing the artifacts and only 1 day after getting the second camera repaired the problem is back. This has not been a wise purchase for me." Second message. "Well the EVF is getting worse (see attached picture). Do you have an updated viewfinder? Is anyone even reading this? I have refrained from posting any of this on the public forums like dpzen, myfinepix or Amazon's customer reviews in hopes of resolving this issue but I'm losing my patience. Here's the pic I took after yesterday's outing." https://googledrive.com/host/0B0SVKF1RQamMd0YzS0ExMkIyZnc/DSCF3405-Mon.JPG July 13 - As you've probably noticed I didn't send the camera back to Fuji yet. I just don't want to lose it for another month and as things stand right now the EVF hasn't gotten significantly worse. The last correspondence I received from them said to call one of their techs and explain the situation. I did talk to a tech last time when I sent the camera to them and they replaced the EVF which didn't fix the problem. Here's what it looks like now. July 15 - I do plan on getting it repaired again just not right now. I really doubt that its a defective EVF since it happened on 2 cameras and again after the EVF was replaced on the current camera. When I do decide to contact Fuji again I will ask if they can replace the circuit board that controls the viewfinder and not just the EVF and if it ever gets properly repaired I'll see if I can buy an extended warranty. Assuming that the viewfinder doesn't get significantly worse I'll probably send it back in August when the temps are too high here to do much photography. July 24 - I saw this here. My X-S1 has developed a EVF problem http://www.dpzen.com/forums/post/54081495 I just saw this and I think I'll follow it for a couple of days. I suspect that this problem will grow and (lucky me) I just happen to be the trend setter. I'm not a member there or I'd tell him of my plight. And that's how I wound up here.

Thanks for your detailed report. I got my X-S1 last month. It's number is 34A----- so maybe it does not have the same problem. We expect high 90s next week so that will be a good test. Since you have had such inconvenience Fuji ought to pay the shipping. I bought mine from Tiger Direct and it had a problem. They not only paid for the shipping, but they shipped a new one by UPS 2-day and I didn't need to return the bad one until I received the new one. I was able to use the bad one until the new one arrived. That was great service.

Dick - I got great service from Amazon also when I returned the first camera. About 20 hours from the time I brought it to the UPS facility until I got the new one. Same deal - 30 days to return the old one if needed. I thought about also returning camera #2 but I assumed that all the cameras in that batch would probably have the same issue so I made the decision to go with Fuji warranty service. I have to admit that for the most part I love the camera IQ-wise. I do a lot of bird pics along Lake Apopka and I love the results I'm getting. Here's my Google+ "Birds along the Lake Apopka Loop Trail " album. I'm not crazy about the slow focus lock and the focus shift after you take a shot but I can live with that. Bill

Those are some great bird shots, very, very nice.

Wow beautiful bird photo's . i wish mine looked half as good. I guess i will have to keep on trying. if you don't mind what are some of you camera setting.

Thanks guys, glad you liked my birds - they're quite cooperative. Nothing special with my settings. Let's see: ISO - Auto 400 Image size - L IQ - F DR - 200 Film Simulation - Velvia Color - Mid Sharpnesss - M-Hard Highlight tone - M-Soft Shadow Tone - Std Noise Reduction - M-High Shutter Priority for BIFs 1/1000 or 1/1200, Aperture Priority usually around 6.4-8.0 for things that need more light and less motion.

Beautiful bird shots, especially the ones with reflections. I think my AF is set to work only when I half-press the shutter. It seems to lock on OK.

Developed on a trip to Herny's lake ID.

October 22 2017

Hi to all of you from Italy

I bought my X-S1 on September 19 20013 and during the first 14 months of its usage I was very happy of it.

After this time I too experienced the EVF problem reported by all of you. The Camera was then sent to London and returned repaired one month later but after 6 months the yellow smears appeared again: in the beginning, as happened the first time, just few yellow dots appeared; but they became quickly a big streak.

London repaired again the camera that was still within the warranty period.

Three months ago, out of the warranty period, the streak appeared again.

I returned the camera to the Service Centre in order to have it shipped again to London and explaining that for sure (I’m 70 years old and I worked for 38 years in electronic) the problem is clearly that ALL the EVF used on the X-S1 are defective! Unfortunately Fuji ceased the X-S1 production and for sure will not design a new EVF for this camera.

Someone reported on line that the EVF problem is a temperature problem: this for sure should be absurd for a camera that, like many others, has a black body!

I think that probably could be true what a Fuji marketing man answered to me: the problem is not a temperature problem and is instead due to the sunlight eventually entered in the EVF; especially when a dioptric correction is adjusted at its limit.

Good luck to all of us!

Roberto
